Child Autism Testing

As parents, your journey with your child is filled with unique experiences and challenges, each contributing to their growth and development. Have you observed certain patterns of behavior or developmental milestones in your child that seem to unfold differently than expected? Perhaps you've noticed subtle differences or delays in their communication skills, social interactions, or sensory experiences that give you pause. These moments of uncertainty can be the catalyst for seeking a deeper understanding of your child's neurodiversity through autism testing.

Recognizing Signs of Autism in Children

Autism presents differently in each child, but some common signs and challenges may include:

Social Difficulties: Difficulty making eye contact, engaging in reciprocal conversation, or understanding social cues.

Communication Challenges: Delayed speech or language development, difficulty initiating or maintaining conversations, or reliance on repetitive phrases or gestures.

Sensory Sensitivities: Heightened sensitivity or aversion to certain sounds, textures, smells, or visual stimuli.

Repetitive Behaviors: Engaging in repetitive movements or actions, such as hand-flapping or rocking, and adherence to rigid routines or rituals.

If you notice consistent patterns of these behaviors or challenges that impact your child's daily life at home, school, or in social environments, exploring autism testing can provide valuable insights into their unique neurodiversity and support their individual needs.

The Importance of Autism Testing for Children

Obtaining an accurate diagnosis of autism for your child is crucial for several reasons:

Early Intervention: Recognizing and embracing your child's neurodiversity early on enables access to timely interventions, therapies, and support services tailored to their individual needs. This proactive approach fosters their development and sets the stage for long-term growth and success.

Tailored Support: A formal diagnosis provides a roadmap for understanding your child's unique strengths, challenges, and needs, enabling you to access appropriate interventions and accommodations that support their growth and success.

Empowerment: Understanding your child's neurodiversity empowers you as a parent to advocate for their needs, access resources, and build a supportive network of professionals, educators, and community members.

The Autism Testing Process for Children

The process of autism testing for children involves the following steps:

Initial Parent Appointment

During this initial session, you'll have the opportunity to engage with the clinician in a discussion surrounding your child's developmental journey and presenting symptoms. We'll delve into crucial aspects such as your child's developmental milestones, educational background, areas of strength, and current difficulties. Providing any mental health records from previous treatment or evaluation processes can greatly assist us in conducting a thorough assessment.

Diagnostic Testing

Depending on the age of your child and your child’s specific needs, we use tests such as the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2) and/or the Monteiro Interview Guidelines for Diagnosing the Autism Spectrum (MIGDAS-2). These assessments are designed to provide a comprehensive and holistic understanding of your child’s neurodivergent profile, acknowledging the diversity of experiences and expressions within the autism community.

During an ADOS-2 assessment, the clinician engages the child in structured social interactions and activities, carefully observing their communication skills, social behavior, and repetitive behaviors or restricted interests. This process allows the clinician to gather valuable information about the individual's strengths, challenges, and unique ways of interacting with the world. This is a play-based assessment and most children find this part fun!

Similarly, the MIGDAS-2 assessment involves a detailed interview with the child and their parents, exploring various aspects of their developmental history, social communication abilities, and sensory experiences. This collaborative approach honors the child's lived experiences and perspectives, recognizing the importance of including their voice in the diagnostic process.

Also, as part of the assessment process, parents will complete standardized questionnaires to provide further insight into the child’s behavior. With your permission, we will also ask your child’s teachers to complete questionnaires, to give a more complete picture of behavior at school.

By using a variety of types of assessments, we are able to gather a holistic perspective of your child’s unique neurodivergence. Our assessment process allows for adjustments to accommodate diverse communication styles, sensory sensitivities, and individual preferences. The goal is not only to identify the presence of autism but also to understand the individual's strengths, needs, and potential areas of support. We understand high-masking presentations of autism, so by using a variety of assessments, we are better able to identify autism in children where other clinicians may have missed it. We also recognize Pathological Demand Avoidance and will evaluate for this profile of autism.

We also do ADHD testing and are happy to add this on to the evaluation!

Feedback and Recommendations: Following the evaluation, you will receive a detailed report outlining the findings, diagnostic conclusions, and recommendations for interventions, therapies, and support services tailored to your child's needs.

Comprehensive Report

Within 1-2 weeks following the completion of testing, you'll receive a comprehensive report detailing the assessment findings, diagnostic conclusions, and personalized recommendations for interventions, accommodations, and support services tailored to your child's unique needs. This detailed report not only highlights your child's areas of strength and challenge but also considers the possibility of co-occurring mental health conditions beyond ADHD. Should your child have additional mental health diagnoses such as depression or anxiety, the report will address these as well, providing recommendations for integrated treatment.

Feedback Session

As part of our commitment to collaborative care, parents have the option to schedule an appointment with the clinician to discuss the evaluation report and findings. During this session, we'll explore the recommendations for treatment and interventions tailored to your child's individual needs, empowering you to make informed decisions about their care and support.
